Regarding the Fort Worth Weekly story he sent yesterday (see yesterday's blog entry below), Brian Roper writes:
Mack:
Love that still of you-know-who on the site. Maybe it's the voice of wishful thinking, but I'm starting to have flashbacks of Nixon's last days. Has the Great Unravelling begun?
As to that FW Weekly story; I cant help but think back to 1976 (my senior year) and working in the AHHS school library (where I could look up Lee Harvey Oswald in their old yearbooks. Damn, I wish I had "borrowed" those! ) when a girl came in all excited one day. Gerald Ford was going to give a speech downtown that day and the motorcade was going to drive right by on I-30! We all raced down and crossed the access road and lined the rails looking down. They had cops to keep us off the bridges, but we were permitted to look down from the side. Sure enough, an ominous gauntlet of military helicopters came from Carswell AFB's direction followed by a large number of motorcycle cops. Finally a black limo cruises by and sure enough there he was, waving at everyone from the back seat.
Times sure have changed; I nearly choked on my Wed. enchilada dinner reading that story in the Weekly. A seven hour lockdown is more than ridiculous; especially considering he probably gave a 10-15 minute speech at that hotel. But then again, when you have to defend your foreign policies from behind Plexiglass and bomb barricades....
I remember seeing Nixon speak at the Trade Mart in Dallas in 1970. On assignment for my father's weekly paper in Cleburne, I had ridden with a bus full of local Republicans to the event. The security was remarkably lax compared with today. Thousands of people pouring into the Trade Mart, and only 2 or 3 Secret Service agents at the door spot-checking purses and what-not. I was carrying a big camera case, thus was sure it would be checked, but it wasn't. Also, the event was not restricted to Nixon supporters, as such events are these days. As a result, there was a large contingent of protesters on the bleachers near the podium; they were very loud. It made all the Nixon supporters furious. At one point, a woman holding an American flag hit a protester over the head with the flag pole. Sent him sprawling. All very exciting. You wouldn't see that sort of thing now. These days just wearing a t-shirt with the slogan "Peace on Earth" could get you arrested at a Bush speech.

Okay, I got tired of Bush giving me the finger every time I opened my own web page, so I posted the above to push him down the page. Any objections? I didn't think so.

And now a word from your president ...

"I'm not meeting again with that goddamned bitch," Bush screamed at aides who suggested he meet again with Cindy Sheehan, the war-protesting mother whose son died in Iraq. "She can go to hell as far as I'm concerned!" LINK
Speaking of Bush, my friend Brian Roper sent me the following from the print edition of the Fort Worth Weekly ...
One way to assess the war on terror is to think about the seemingly innocuous things we give up while trying to protect our way of life. Some Grapevine residents recently were told they could not leave their homes or businesses during a seven hour period on Aug 3 because President Bush would be arriving by helicopter for a speaking engagement at the Gaylord Texas Resort. "Our best advice is to leave the area before 9am and don't return until after 4pm," Grapevine police advised their citizens. And those who stayed at home were advised against even trying to watch the president's arrival from certain perches."No one will be allowed to be standing on apartment patios or even looking out of the windows(!) toward the landing zone," the police said, adding ominously "You wouldn't want to be confused for a sniper."
Certainly not. We understand the need to safeguard the president but wonder if there might not be another way to get the dude in for his speech without resorting to a virtual lockdown of the neighborhood. Let's see, which civilization was it that wouldn't let its people so much as look at their supreme ruler? Made 'em lie face down until he passed? It sure wasn't democracy.

They were not able to do it in Crawford, Texas. There are certain lengths to which even they cannot go. Therefore, all they could do about the situation in Crawford was to smear Cindy Sheehan with childish lies, stage an act of childish vandalism, childishly fire gunshots over the protesters' heads, send a phony presidential motorcade down the road so the Secret Service could childishly brandish their pop-guns at the protesters, and trot out their childish, fecal-brained war supporters to stage childish counter demonstrations.
No, they could not do it in Crawford. Even the neo-cons, in the depths of their ignorance, their group psychosis, and their utterly rotten Evil, were able to perceive a potential public relations disaster if they Tasered a contingent of Gold Star mothers. No, they could not do it.
But, of course, the Boy King wanted them to do it. Oh, how badly he wanted them to do it. But they (his Neo-Con handlers) told him no. Whereupon the Boy King threw an epic fit; he foamed at the mouth, he cursed, he stamped his feet, and he fouled his diapers most unspeakably.
But, sometimes, even the Boy King cannot get what he wants.
So, instead of doing it in Crawford, they did it in Utah; they did it to a non-political, non-violent, utterly inoffensive and completely legal gathering of young people. And they did it for no other reason than to send a message ...

Cindy Sheehan's Vigil in Crawford
Cindy Sheehan has returned to Crawford to continue her vigil. Her ranks of supporters continue to grow. Among them are former U.S. ambassador Joseph Wilson, whose wife Valerie Plame's identity as an undercover CIA operative was leaked in retaliation for his criticism of the Bush administration. Quote: "The Bush White House and its right-wing allies are responding to Cindy Sheehan and the military families' vigil in central Texas in the same way that they always respond to bad news--by unleashing personal attacks and smears against her." LINK
Meanwhile, back in Neo-Con Land, Bush has found some poor deluded woman who is happy she has four sons risking their lives in Iraq for no good reason. Big surprise. There are plenty of those kinds of parents. There are fewer parents, however, like Cindy Sheehan who has the courage to face the truth about this war and to hold our non-elected leaders accountable.

Who Would Jesus Kill?
This is the third time in five days I've used the above heading.
The first time was on 8/19 to accompany a link to the website of Force Ministries (affiliated with the Trinity Broadcasting Network). I was prompted to link to the site after seeing its Flash intro featuring soldiers pointing guns accompanied by slogans such as "Purpose: Impart faith in Christ."
Interestingly, the intro has since disappeared; the link now leads to a notification that the site will be available soon. Perhaps, after the intro began to draw criticism, someone decided it would be wise to remove it. They did not act fast enough, however; someone had already captured one of the images ...

The second time I used the "Who Would Jesus Kill" heading was yesterday when I posted links related to televangelist Pat Robertson's advocating the assassination of the Venezuelan president.
And now, today, I'm prompted to use the heading again after reading the
following:
Poll:
Churchgoers Tend to Support War
Warmongering by so-called Christians is, of course, nothing new. In fact, the pulpit variety of war propaganda has always been the most effective. If you can convince the people that God not only approves of the war, but demands it, they will be more than happy to kill in His Name and to offer their own children up to the slaughter.

Phony
Al Qaeda Attack in the Red Sea
8:21 pm CDT
But who will keep us safe from the people keeping us safe?
A few days ago it was reported in an AP news story that infants
are finding themselves on the government's no-fly list. Today, we learn that one
of the infants mentioned in the story will not be removed from the list no matter how many headlines the matter generates and how much hell is raised as a result.
Therefore, his parents can continue to expect long delays in boarding their flights, while TSA officials verify that the infant is indeed an infant and not a member of Al Qaeda in disguise.
Fortunately, TSA is aware that perfectly harmless individuals, such as infants, are being unnecessarily detained as potential terrorists. Therefore, they have come up with a solution: Secure Flight.
Under Secure Flight, passengers will be able to avoid delays and intrusive searches of their persons by submitting to intrusive searching of their personal data--their credit card purchases, their DNA, etc.
An infant on a no-fly-list, for instance, would be prescreened and certified as a bona fide, non-terrorist infant with a good credit rating before ever arriving at the airport, thus could board the flight on time.
Of course, collecting personal data on infants--or anyone, for that matter--will not make anyone safer. And the government knows this.
You see, the government is not really interested in keeping us safe; what the government really wants is unfettered access to every last detail of our lives. This will help the government do a better job of controlling us.
So, to accomplish this end, the government has created a climate of fear to make us think that it is we, the People, who need this massive data base, not the government. And when this data base is complete, it will not be just a data base of air travelers. No, in time, it will include all forms of travel; even walking your dog will require disclosing all your personal information to the government.
Now, a great many of us are more afraid of this data base than we are of terrorists. Thus, Secure Flight will be a hard sell--unless, a selling point other than fear is found.
Well, the government has found it. The one thing Americans hate worse than the idea of being blown to bits is being inconvenienced--having to wait in line too long, or--worse--being pulled out of line for questioning and a cavity search and missing the flight. No, it would be much better to give up all your personal information so you can breeze through security, catch your flight, and get a good seat on the plane. And, afterwards, you can always tell yourself that the information you gave up was something the government would have found out anyway, and that it will keep you safe.
That is why we are continually hearing these outrageous stories about infants on no-fly lists, women being subjected to
public breast exams by security screeners, and so forth. The message is being sent: "You don't have to submit to this litany of indignities; just submit to One Big Indignity--tell us your political and religious beliefs, give us your financial records and your DNA, give us everything, get it over with--it is quick, it is painless, and afterwards, when you are breezing through airport security while others are still in line, you can pretend you are free. And safe."
