The Simulacra

I have this uneasy feeling that when the Philip K. Dick android is unveiled in Chicago this weekend, he will tell us he did not really die in 1982, but rather, wrote a novel in which he died and was later resurrected as an android. Everyone will get a big laugh out of this, but the laughter will die out when a large object suddenly covers the sun and we realize it is a giant book cover closing down on us ...

Another Disinfomercial from Penn and Teller
In a recent segment of their bullshit show, Penn and Teller enumerate the dangers of the Patriot Act. This is of course commendable. However, a few minutes into the segment, Penn (who supports the official versions of the JFK assassination and 9/11) characterizes the passage of the Patriot Act as the result of "incompetence" on the part of Congress, rather than something more sinister, and at the end of the segment assures us that "America is really safe and your government probably doesn't care enough to spy on you"--a readily
verifiable untruth.
See the segment HERE if you have time to waste ... on bullshit.

Now that I've got my priorities straight, I'm going to start posting all the latest links on the Michael Jackson trial. I realize it's a bit late, considering that the trial is almost over. But what the hell, better late than never.
My first link, appropriately, concerns the sheer size of the media coverage of this historic trial. To be exact, there are presently 2,200
journalists awaiting the verdict. It is believed that this is "the largest-ever media contingent for a criminal trial," surpassing even the O. J. Simpson and Scott Peterson trials in its importance to humanity.
Meanwhile, for those of you still curious about the trivial stories not being covered by those 2,200 "journalists," here's a website you might find interesting:

Important News by the Numbers
Hey, boys and girls, here's a game you can play that's fun and educational!
It will teach you all about numbers and how they reveal the importance of different news stories.
The premise is very simple: The more coverage a news story receives, the more important it is. Does this make sense to you? It makes sense to me.
Let's get started.
First, you must determine how much coverage a story is receiving. How do you do this?
Well, you could go through each newspaper in the world and count all the stories. But that would be difficult and would take a very long time.
Fortunately, thanks to the Internet, there is a much easier and faster way: the Google news search!
Here's how you do it. Do a Google news search under any topic of your choosing, then write down the number of results for each topic.
Today (6/10/05), let's start by doing a Google search of H.R.
1528, the "anti-drug" legislation introduced by Rep. James Sensenbrenner (R-WI); this yields 16 results.
Next, let's do a Google search of famous movie star Russell
Crowe; this yields 3,310 results.
What does this tell us? It tells us that news stories about Russell Crowe, who made headlines this past week by throwing a telephone at a hotel concierge, are more important than news stories about H.R. 1528, the Stalinist legislation that would force American citizens to snitch on their friends and family members.
Now, to determine with mathematical precision just how much more important the Russell Crowe story is than H.R. 1528, get out your calculators and divide 3,310 by 16; this produces a quotient of 206.875 = 207.
What does this mean? This means that famous movie star Russell Crowe's temper tantrum is 207 times more important than H.R. 1528.
Wasn't that fun, boys and girls? And educational, too!
Let's do a few more Google news searches and see what we can learn about the world we live in.
A search of Downing
Street Memo yields 756 results.
A search of military
draft yields 4,310 results.
A search of roadside
bombs in Iraq, which are the number one killer of the troops (today, 6/10/05, five
Marines were killed), yields 11,400 results.
A search of famous pop star Michael
Jackson (whose trial for child molestation has made headlines for many
months) yields 40,300 results.
Which proves mathematically that the child molestation trial of Michael Jackson is three-and-a-half times more important than the slaughter in Iraq, nine-and-a-half times more important than the possibility of America's youth being drafted to die in that slaughter, and 53-and-half-times more important than the fact that the entire slaughter is based on lies.
Now, don't you feel better knowing these Fun Facts?
(NOTE: Search results change by the minute; therefore, the above numbers will not be accurate after the time this blog entry was written. Therefore, it is suggested that you keep track of newer search results of these topics. You'll have great fun watching the Michael Jackson story become more important by the minute!)
