Well, I stayed up too late tonight working on my next book (to be published by Fantagraphics in Fall 2004, just in time for the next presidential election—stand by for more details!) and have run out of time to prepare “Showdown at Rio Bobo” for its on-line debut. I must, then, unfortunately, go to bed so I can wake up on time in the morning and go to work and pay the bills. But, never fear, Comix Fans, the weekend is but one day away—then, I will have time to continue preparing more new comics for this site.

Recent developments in the Princess Diana murder case have reminded me I need to upload my comic story “Operation Blue Beam” (excerpted panel above) to the new server. Rayelen Allen, author of Diana Queen of Heaven and proprietor of Rumor Mill News has been urging me to post it. My friend, publisher of Austin Para Times, and radio talk show host Russell Dowden has informed me of the tragic death of his friend Constance Clear, a well known author in the UFO research field. She died in a motorcycle accident in Phoenix, Arizona.

Last summer my friends Mark Frauenfelder and Carla Sinclair (of bOING-bOING fame) left the wilds of Los Angeles (along with their two young daughters) for the wilds of the South Pacific—the Cook Islands to be specific. They have been chronicling their adventures in LA Weekly and also in this photo blog.

This morning driving to work, stuck in stop-and-go traffic on Austin’s MoPac Expressway, I was listening to Joyce Riley and Dave VonKleist’s program The Power Hour on Radio Free Austin and heard an interview with Daniel Hopsicker, investigative journalist. Previously, I had read his article “The Sugarland Sanction,” which deals with the mysterious death of Enron Vice Chairman Cliff Baxter. However, I was not familiar with Hopsicker’s research into the murky connections of Mohammed Atta, the alleged “mastermind” of the September 11 attacks, with such spooky characters as Rudi Dekkers and one Jackson Stephens, who in addition to being a key player in such scandals as Iran/Contra, was the top contributor to both Bill Clinton and the senior George Bush’s presidential campaigns. Hopsicker’s website Mad Cow Morning News contains articles which are MUST reading.

Propaganda watch: Phony letters to editor

Letters from hometown soldiers describing their successes rebuilding Iraq have been appearing in newspapers across the country as U.S. public opinion on the mission sours.

And all the letters are the same.

A Gannett News Service search found identical letters from different soldiers with the 2nd Battalion of the 503rd Airborne Infantry Regiment, also known as "The Rock," in 11 newspapers, including Snohomish, Wash. . . .

Beckley, W.Va.: "When I told him he wrote such a good letter, he said: 'What letter?'" Timothy Deaconson said Friday, recalling the phone conversation he had with his son, Nick. "This is just not his (writing) style."
