Taser Report
A disabled man visiting the Universal Studios theme park in Orlando was shot with a Taser . The man was simply trying to reason with the off-duty cop who was moonlighting as a security guard at the park. This is the latest in a growing list of such incidents. Some are calling for a ban on Tasers, but I think these incidents say more about the police than they do about the weapon itself. Police departments need to stop hiring cretins and thugs as officers, and they also need to train officers to deal with the public in a more rational manner. Today’s cop culture, coupled with the lack of intelligence of so many cops, is the problem, not the Taser itself.

Continuing the Silver Age Superman theme begun two days ago in this blog, I present the above classic JFK-Marilyn-Jerry Lewis cover. This scan, however, is not from my own extensive personal collection, but rather, was sent to me tonight by my friend Brian Roper.
By the way, Brian recently wrote two great articles on the File 23 site that I greatly enjoyed: Living in a Turd World and My Hometown. I especially related to the latter article, because it happens that Brian’s hometown is Fort Worth, where I spent a good portion of my formative years. I lived there in the ‘50s and afterwards lived close to it in one suburb or another, until ’78 when I moved to Austin; also, over the years, I have had many an occasion to re-visit Fort Worth. Thus, I can easily relate to Brian’s memories of Fort Worth in the ‘60s and his befuddlement over the swiftness and thoroughness of its replacement with an almost unrecognizable city.

“It was a time of great and exalting excitement …”

My friend Luke Przybylski, proprietor of the highly entertaining art blog The Bore Hole, sent me THIS LINK containing a true account (complete with photos) of a military recruitment rally held last month at Porter Memorial Baptist Church in Lexington, Kentucky. The shameful spectacle described therein (replete with the Cross being covered with the American flag during the pro-war pitch) reminds me of the scene in Mark Twain’s “The War Prayer.”
Mark Twain wrote "The War Prayer" during the Philippine-American War. It was submitted for publication to Harper's Bazaar, but the magazine rejected it. Twain later wrote to a friend, "I don't think the prayer will be published in my time. None but the dead are permitted to tell the truth."
Read “The War Prayer” HERE. It is as relevant today as it was in Twain’s time.

If you click on that graphic, it will take you to the website of Mothers Against the Draft, where you can sign the on-line petition.
