A READER WRITES: Hello again Mack, in response to the article you have on your website regarding the proposed compulsory military service: I wonder whether the honorable(?) senator Chuck Hagel will be including his two children (son and daughter) in the ranks of those who will have the honor to be used as mercenaries for Haliburton over in Iraq and elsewhere. I hear that his kids are not yet of draft age, and so are safe for now,but since the neocons have stated that this righteous war could last decades, what will he be saying in a few years? Isn't he the man who asks of all Americans to step up and help pay some of the price? By the way, this is the same Chuck Hagel who was a founder, chairman and CEO of Election Systems and Software (ES&S), the big voting machine company. In the elections of 1996 and 2002 it was ES&S machines ONLY that were allowed to count his votes. And guess what....he won!!!

Just when you thought you had an alternative to air travel: Amtrak will soon screen all passengers. Next it’ll be Greyhound, then it’ll be city buses and taxi cabs, and finally it’ll be your own car. You won’t be able to go anywhere without first being breathalyzed, analyzed, paralyzed, and sodomized. Hell, you won’t even be able to go to Disneyland.

Last night I saw Adam Gorightly. Adam was in Austin at the Anomaly Archives to promote his new biography of Kerry Thornley (see blog entry below). It was great to see Adam, whom I had not seen since our big camping trip in Utah last summer, and very enjoyable to hear his lecture on Thornley, Oswald, the Principia Discordia, and other related topics. When I got home, I started reading Adam’s book. I’ll have more to say about the book later. For now, suffice to say, it is very highly recommended.

NEWS ALERT:
POLICE END MAJOR CRIME WAVE:
9-YEAR-OLD GIRL ARRESTED FOR STEALING RABBIT
Highlights from the CBS/AP story:
A 9-year-old girl accused of stealing a rabbit and $10 from a neighbor's home was arrested, handcuffed and questioned at a Florida police station.
Thank god they caught her.
A Pasco County sheriff's deputy found the black-and-white rabbit, named Oreo, hopping around in the girl's living room, according to the arrest report. She was read her rights and taken away in the back of a patrol car.
The girl began to cry during questioning Tuesday. She admitted taking the rabbit belonging to another child, but denied taking two $5 bills and some change, according to reports.
"I think this is a little unusual to say the very least," Cecka Green of Voices for Florida's Children said. "To treat children as hardened criminals, when back in the old days that may have just been seen as mischief that could have been handled by the parents, can contribute to some problems with our kids in this society."
Sheriff's spokesman Kevin Doll defended the arrest, and said if the victim of a crime wants an arrest, deputies are required to act if there is enough evidence.
"Somebody entered a residence without permission and stole money and a pet rabbit. That's burglary," Doll told the St. Petersburg Times. "I don't know what other explanation you need. Nine years old is enough to know right from wrong."
And Mr. Doll is old enough to know his ass from a hole in the ground. So why doesn’t he?
The girl was released to her mother from a juvenile assessment center about an hour after her arrest, which she said was scary. She also didn't like the deputy.
"He put one handcuff on me really tight," she said Thursday. In the patrol car, "He just stared at me in the mirror."
This deputy, why is he allowed to run around loose? More to the point, why is he allowed to have contact with children?

Did the FBI murder Ernest Hemingway?

Ernest Hemingway's FBI file reveals that he was not delusional after all: the FBI really was following him. Almost every major American writer was surveilled by the FBI during the 1930s and 40s, but J. Edgar Hoover had a particular obsession with Hemingway who had angered him when he referred to the FBI as an "American Gestapo." FBI files show that Hoover was determined to discredit Hemingway as a Communist, a drunk, delusional, or all three. In 1960 Hemingway entered the Mayo Clinic for liver treatment; his doctor, who was informing on him to the FBI, administered unnecessary shock treatments which destroyed Hemingway’s mind. Alex Jones: Condoleezza Rice is a Lying Shill for Her Terrorist Masters

9:53 pm CDT
Today, on his radio show, Alex Jones interviewed the manager and a member of the band Ozomatli who, as noted previously, were mistreated by Austin police during the recent South by Southwest music conference.
According to the manager, Amy Sue Blackman-Romero, and band member Jiro Yamaguchi, this is what happened:
The band had been told by the fire marshal that the crowd inside the nightclub needed to be reduced. So, in compliance with the fire marshal's orders, the band finished its act by leading the audience in a conga line onto the street.
At this point, the police descended on the scene to enforce the city's noise ordinance. Everyone was ordered back inside the nightclub. The band turned around to comply with the orders, but due to the crowd and confusion could not immediately get back inside.
Meanwhile, the crowd began booing the police. The police bravely responded to this assault on their dignity by firing pepper spray into the crowd, causing a panic. (Later, it was stated by the police department that a member of the crowd may have fired the pepper spray; however, the department has since backed off this claim.)
In the panic, the band's percussionist, Yamaguchi was jostled, causing him to bump a police officer with his drum. Yamaguchi was then arrested for assaulting a police officer (a felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison).
Another band member, Willy Abers, was also arrested. Since the charges against him have been changed several times, it is not clear exactly why he was arrested. Most recently, the charges against him were changed to “violating the noise ordinance.” Tomorrow they may change it to something else. Stay tuned.
As for Blackman-Romero, she was arrested for "interfering with police procedure” when she was overheard expressing her outrage about the incident to an Austin Chronicle reporter. Remember this, folks: Complaining to the press about the police is a crime in Austin, Texas.
(See a video of the Ozomatli incident here.)
It should be mentioned that, since the Ozomatli incident, there has been another high-profile case of Austin police misbehavior in the entertainment district. Last week, actor Jason Patric, in town to promote his new film The Alamo, was arrested after he and a group of people were ordered by a police officer to step onto a sidewalk. (See this story .)
Patric complied, but did so in a "mocking" manner (says the officer) by shuffling onto the sidewalk. The officer, gravely offended by Patric’s alleged mockery, accused Patric of being drunk. Patric stated that he was not drunk and requested a sobriety test to prove it. The officer refused the request and placed him under arrest for public intoxication. While being handcuffed, Patric allegedly scuffled with the officer, leading to an additional charge of resisting arrest. Patric denies all charges.
You can watch a video of Patric’s arrest here. It is difficult to see what is happening in the video; however, the audio is interesting. A police officer can be heard saying, "Back up," while someone replies, "We are backing up." Someone can also be heard apologizing to the officer. Then a man's voice says, "He apologized. Please don't arrest him." For several seconds, the man continues pleading with police not to arrest Patric, to no avail. Near the end of the tape, a woman can be heard saying, "He did nothing."
These incidents are not isolated; many more incidents of this kind occur every night in Austin's entertainment district, but they do not involve celebrities, thus do not draw the attention of the media.
It has been said that these incidents are due to the police exercising "zero tolerance" to keep the entertainment district safe. That may be. But, who will keep us safe from the people keeping us safe? And when will we, the People, start practicing zero tolerance for zero tolerance?
