On April 13, my good friend Adam Gorightly will visit Austin to deliver a free lecture and sign copies of his new biography of Kerry Thornley, The Prankster and the Conspiracy. Speaking on his new book The Prankster and the Conspiracy: The Story of Kerry Thornley and How He Met Oswald and Inspired the Counterculture.

The Prankster and the Conspiracy details the life of one of the 1960s counterculture’s most fascinating characters -- Kerry Wendell Thornley, a writer, philosopher, Zen dishwasher, enlightened prankster, and, possibly, an Oswald double with disturbing ties to the Kennedy assassination.

A lifelong provocateur, Thornley was linked to many of the fringe elements of the time. He helped create the spoof religion called the Discordian Society and its tract, the Principia Discordia. He coined the term “paganism” to describe various nature religions. And he befriended Robert Anton Wilson, inspired the Illuminatus, and gave his anarchic support to the Bavarian Illuminati, a brilliant prank.

But Thornley’s path also crossed Lee Harvey Oswald’s. It’s a fact that the two served together in the Marines. But did they keep in touch later, in New Orleans? And were they both used by foes of JFK? Jim Garrison investigated their relationship -- and so does Adam Gorightly in The Prankster and the Conspiracy, an account of Thornley’s tragic yet hilarious life, the JFK conspiracy, and the chaos caused by worshipping the goddess of discord. With a foreword by Robert Anton Wilson.

It’s been a bad week for the Fourth Amendment.

Yesterday, the Supreme Court rejected our right to refuse to produce identification. (See this story.) The police can now demand "your papers" under any circumstances, even if you are not driving a motor vehicle or have done nothing to be suspected of having committed a crime.

And, earlier in the week, the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that the police do not need a warrant to search private property, as long as it is to ensure their own safety. (See these stories.) Since their "safety" is whatever they say it is, we should view this ruling as the end of our right to be protected against unreasonable search and seizure.

Fortunately, there is some good news:

We cannot, however, allow the occasional victory, such as the one cited above, to lull us into a false sense of security. The assault on the Bill of Rights will continue, and will not end until the forces of tyranny have taken every last right from us, and every last scrap of human dignity—unless, that is, we choose to exercise the power of our numbers and end this matter on our own terms. Which we can do, not by violence, but by working harder to inform our fellow citizens and to demand that our public officials begin defending our Constitution, rather than destroying it.

As Alex Jones stated yesterday, "The US Congress and legislature of Louisiana should call an emergency session to investigate possible criminal charges of sedition against those ruling to eradicate the 4th Amendment." I concur, and would add that we should not settle for anything less. The situation really is that serious.

If you have not already read the transcript of Alex Jones’ interview Col. Donn de Grand-Pre, it is highly recommended. His description of an upcoming military counter-coup d’etat against the Bush gang (which staged an “administrative” coup on September 11, 2001) causes me to wonder if this previously posted story about Army “friendly fire” destroying a CIA plot to plant WMDs in Iraq might not have been a mistake, but rather, intentional sabotage. If another administrative coup and a military counter-coup occur in the near future, as Col. de Grand-Pre predicts, things could get scary indeed.

Austin’s SXSW music festival was marred by police misbehavior last night. Basically, what happened was this: The Grammy-winning band Ozomatli led a conga line out of a Sixth Street nightclub and into the street, thus unintentionally violating Austin’s silly noise ordinance. (I say “silly” because the only reason for the noise ordinence is because a few yuppies decided to start living in the entertainment district and were disturbed by the sound of live music coming from the nightclubs. What, exactly, did they expect?) As is always the case in these ugly episodes, the police have their side of the story which is completely different from that of every eyewitness present. (After years of reading about these things in Austin, I have yet to see the police side of the story stand up to scrutiny.) Basically, the eyewitnesses describe the police overreacting and practicing “zero tolerance” towards everyone present. Pepper spray was used on the crowd and three musicians were arrested, one of whom was booked on a dubious charge of assaulting an officer with his drum. Read about the incident HERE. You will also see a series of photos showing the band’s manager trying to reason with a hollering cop and getting arrested for it.

DREAM: I pick up a copy of Ms. Magazine. The cover story is titled: "One Woman's Story: I Killed Him to Stop His Lies." The cover is animated, a video loop of an actual killing: a woman fires a gun, hitting a man wearing a bicycle helmet who's eating at a picnic table, causing him to flip backwards off the bench. It plays over and over. I don't bother to read the article; I know it's some snotty intellectual manifesto that justifies the killing of this hapless white male as a blow for Oppressed Peoples Everywhere.

This is one of those thoughtful dreams: I reflect on how we all become angry enough to experience homicidal ideation at times, but most of us wisely never act on these thoughts—not just because of the legal consequences, but because we have a conscience and know that any killing not done in self defense disqualifies the killer from membership in the human race.

The scene shifts to a hospital where a new psychiatric medication of some kind is being tested. I am one of the guinea pigs. The drug is a blue, glowing, gooey substance that you have to eat. The doctor stuffs a handful into his own mouth to show it's all right. After we eat the stuff, I notice that my hands are glowing blue. Everyone else's hands are blue as well, and so are their mouths and ears …
